Microsoft MFA Setup Instructions

Microsoft MFA Setup Instructions

Step 1: Sign in to Your Microsoft Account

  • Open a web browser and go to https://myATS.asburyseminary.edu/
  • Log in using your ATS email and password.  (If prompted to select an account type, choose Work/School Account.)

Step 2: Start the MFA Setup Process

  • After signing in, you’ll see a prompt saying, "More information required." Click Next to begin setting up MFA.

Step 3: Choose Your Authentication Method

You can choose one of the following methods for authentication:

  • Microsoft Authenticator App
  • Google Authenticator App
  • Text Message (SMS)
  • Phone Call

Microsoft’s default will be to suggest using the Authenticator app.  You are not required to use this method unless you connect to Seminary resources using VPN.  If you prefer a different method, click the link at the bottom of the window: “I want to set up a different method.”

Option 1: Set Up the Microsoft Authenticator App

  1. Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
  2. Open the app and allow any required permissions.
  3. On your computer, click Next on the Microsoft Authenticator set up page.
  4. It will prompt you to set up an account in the App.  Click Next.
  5. A QR code will appear on your screen along with instructions to scan it with your phone.
  6. Open the app on your phone, tap the + button, and scan the QR code.
  7. Once the account is added, click Next on your computer.
  8. Test the app by approving the notification sent to your phone.

Option 2: Set Up Text Message (SMS) or Phone Call

  1. Click “I want to setup a different method” at the bottom of the Microsoft Authenticator page.
  2. A window will appear with alternative options.  Select Phone.

Be sure to select Phone instead of ‘Office Phone,’ as the latter might complicate the process going forward.  While ‘Hardware token’ is also listed as an option, it is not available at this time.

  1. Enter your mobile phone number when prompted.

  1. Select Receive a code if you prefer to authenticate with a Text Message (SMS) or Call me if you prefer to authenticate with a phone call.
  2. Click Next.

a)     If you selected to Receive a code, you will receive a text message with a six digit code.  Enter it on your computer when prompted and click Next.

b)     If you selected a call, you will receive a phone call.  Answer the call and follow the instructions provided.

If you decide that you don’t want to authenticate by phone, you can click “I want to set up a different method” again and choose a different option.

Step 4: Complete the Setup

  1. Once you’ve successfully verified your method, you’ll see a confirmation screen.
  2. Click Done to finish the setup.

Step 5: Test MFA

Next time you log in, you’ll be prompted to use MFA.

  • If using the app, approve the notification.
  • If using text or calls, enter the code you receive.
