How to Convert Footnotes To and From Endnotes in Microsoft Word

Word for Windows (365, 2016, 2010, and 2007)


To convert one or two footnotes to endnotes:
1. Open your document and select the References tab. 
2. In the Footnotes group, click "Show Notes".
3. Select the notes you want to convert, then right-click.
4. Select "Convert to Footnote" or "Convert to Endnote".

To convert all footnotes or endnotes:
1. Open the document and select the References tab.
2. Click the Footnote & Endnote Dialog Box launcher (it appears as a small square in the bottom-right corner of the tab).
3. Then click "Convert...".
4. Click "OK" , "Apply", or the "X" to exit.


Word for Mac OS X (365, 2016, 2011, and 2008)

To convert one or two footnotes to endnotes:
1. Select the notes you want to convert, then right-click.
2. Select "Convert to Footnote" or "Convert to Endnote".

To convert all footnotes or endnotes:
1. Open your Document.
2. Select the Insert menu (top of the screen NOT the top of the window [Note: Current for Word for Mac version 16.45]).
Location of the "Insert" menu
3. Select "Footnote...".
OR - [In Word 2016 & 2011] Click "Convert...".
OR - [In Word 2008] Click "Options..."  then click "Convert...".
6. Select from one of the following options:
      -- Convert all footnotes to endnotes.
      --Convert all endnotes to footnotes.
      --Swap footnotes and endnotes.
10. Click "OK" in each of the dialogue boxes.
